Auditors provide certification services for transnational standards and codes of conduct which regulate the labor and environmental conditions of production in global value chains. Independent from public authority, auditors have come to play a crucial role in monitoring and compliance with local, national and international laws.

On 26 September 2017, the T.M.C. Asser Instituut hosts a ‘Doing Business Right’ Talk discussing the implications of the increasingly visible role of auditors in the regulation of global value chains, and sketches an agenda for future legal research.

The keynote speaker is Phillip Paiement, assistant professor at Tilburg Law School. His research focuses on transnational environmental and labor governance in the intersections between transnational private regulatory regimes and public law. His current project focuses on social and environmental auditors and their role monitoring compliance with international and domestic labor and environmental law.

When:  26 September 2017, 15 - 17hrs
Where: T.M.C. Asser Instituut, The Hague

Doing Business Right
The T.M.C. Asser Instituut carries out research on developments in international and European law and its potential for serving the cultivation of trust and respect in the global, regional, national and local societies in which the law operates. The talk on Transnational Auditing is part of the newly established research project of the ASSER Institute on ‘Doing Business Right, which is part of the broader research strand ‘Advancing Public Interests in International and European Law’.

As part of this new research strand, the Asser Institute organises the 'Doing Business Right' Talk series. It aims at discussing cutting-edge fundamental legal research connected to the regulation of transnational corporations. It hosts presentations by leading scholars on emerging legal topics. The DBR Talks bring together an audience of academics, practitioners and stakeholders in order to disseminate crucial findings among relevant audiences, to bridge the gap between theory and practice, and to initiate a conversation on the research of responsible business conduct.
