Tim McCormack on Peace v. Justice and the Role of War Crimes Trials

The Supranational Criminal Law Lecture Series aims to contribute to information-sharing and public discourse on contemporary legal issues, while benefiting from the input of distinguished practitioners and experts in the field. The lecture series are aimed at all professionals working with, or interested in the international legal activities in The Hague. These include lawyers, journalists, diplomats, NGO representatives, LL.M-students, and academics.

Tim McCormack is Professor of Law at the University of Melbourne Law School and Special Adviser on International Humanitarian Law to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.  He was the Foundation Director of the Asia Pacific Centre for Military Law (2001-2010) and the Foundation Australian Red Cross Professor of International Huamnmitarian Law (1996-2010) both at the Melbourne Law School. From 2002 - 2006 he acted as amicus curiae on international law issues in the trial of Slobodan Milosevic and from 2003-2007 he provided International Humanitarian Law advice in the defense of David Hicks - the Australian held at Guantanamo Bay and tried by US Military Commission.

 
Tim first met Avril McDonald in 1996 and accepted her invitation to become an inauguiral member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Yearbook of International Huamnitarian Law in 1998.  In 2003 he took over from Professor Horst Fischer as General Editor of the Yearbook while Avril was still Managing Editor.  He handed over the General Editorship to Professor Mike Schmitt earlier in 2010 but continues as the Editor of the Correspondents' Reports Section and also as a  member of the Advisory Board.  He sees his ongoing support for the Yearbook as a testament to Avril's passion, commitment and dedication to ensuring the success of the project.
