The Hague Forum for Judicial Expertise announces:

5-Day course on International Law
for judges and other professionals working in the justice sector
14 –18 November, 2011
 

Course Content
The course will review the sources of public international law and its subjects such as states, international organizations and individuals. It will deal, amongst others, with:

 
· The application of International law by domestic courts;
· The relationship between national and international law;
· Jurisdiction issues;
· International human rights law;
· International humanitarian law;
- International criminal law

It will also cover problems of diplomatic immunities with which domestic courts may be confronted. In addition, attention will be given to recent developments in peaceful settlement of disputes and the use of force and maintenance of international peace and security, including the role of the United Nations.
Visits to the courts in The Hague will be organized, such as the International Court of Justice and the Yugoslavia Tribunal.

Target Audience
This course is open for registration for English speaking judges or other professionals in the field, such as prosecutors, ministry officials and lawyers, who may be confronted with aspects of international law in their daily work and wish to strengthen their theoretical and practical knowledge of international law.

Learning Objectives
On completion of the course, participants will be grounded in the various aspects of international law and be familiar with relevant sources of information and the practical tools necessary to apply international law in practice.
Ample group discussions and networking opportunities will ensure that current actual current problems encountered on the work floor are addressed and deliberated on.

The Experts
The lectures will be given by highly qualified academic lecturers from institutions in the Netherlands and elsewhere and by practitioners, such as legal advisers, judges and prosecutors working at international tribunals in The Hague or at Dutch courts. This gives the participants the opportunity to discuss both their practical issues and have discussion on a more theoretical level.
