Asser Sports Law Lunch & Learn

“The new FIFA Regulations for players’ agents: De-regulation or Re-regulation?”
An analysis of the new FIFA Regulations on working with intermediaries

Presented by: Dr. Roberto Branco Martins, lecturer in Labour Law and Sport; and International Sports Law at the University of Amsterdam. Roberto is the founder of Pro Agent, an organisation which represents supports and promotes the interests of licensed players’ agents, and co-founder of the European Football Agents Association (EFAA). Furthermore, both as editor and as author, he contributed to the book “Players’ Agents Worldwide - Legal Aspects”, T.M.C. Asser Press (2007).

Short summary: On 1 April 2015 the new FIFA Regulations on working with intermediaries will replace the FIFA Regulations on Players’ agents. With the new Regulations, FIFA aims to have a system “that is more transparent and simpler in its implementation and administration”.

This Lunch & Learn will compare the two Regulations and discuss the salient legal issues arising under the new FIFA Regulations. Moreover, Roberto will analyse how the new Regulations will affect the profession of players’ agent, the professional football players and the football world at large. Questions such as whether the new Regulations create more transparency or whether they, in fact, “de-regulate” the profession of players’ agent will be tackled.
