Prof. Mr. Ivo Giesen

Member of the Supervisory Board

  • Department:
    Supervisory Board

Ivo Giesen (1972) works to find (legal) solutions to today's societal problems using the law (torts, civil procedure) in a creative manner, while taking in inspiration from elsewhere (empirical legal studies, law & psychology, etc) to cross traditional barriers, if needed.

Giesen is Professor of Private Law at the Molengraaff Institute for Private Law since 2004. He wrote his PhD under supervision of Maurits Barendrecht at the University of Tilburg on ‘Bewijs en aansprakelijkheid’ (Den Haag 2001). During that time he also worked part time as paralegal at De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek in The Hague. After defending his thesis, he worked at the University of Tilburg as both postgraduate and senior lecturer. Since 2006, Ivo Giesen also serves as honorary deputy justice in the Court of Appeal at ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

His current research interests include the (multidisciplinary) study of Tort Law, Civil Procedure, Adjudication and Administration of Justice, and the areas of law related to these subjects. His inaugural lecture at Utrecht University, for instance, combined elements of tort law and civil procedure with comparative law and psychological insights. In the last years, he wrote well received studies for the Dutch Lawyers Society (NJV, 2007) and for the Society for Private Law (VBR, 2008), and was Visiting Professor at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa. Giesen holds several ediorial positions and was elected as member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW) in 2010 and as member of the Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (KHMW) in 2017. In 2012 he was chosen as Utrecht University's 'Teacher of the Year'. In the early months of 2017, he was visiting teacher for the Global Law Program at Leuven University, Belgium.

From February 2013 until March 2017 Giesen was program director of UCALL, the Utrecht Centre for Accountability and Liability Law, a multidimensional research team focussing on the shifting boundaries of liability rules, both within the domains of public law as well as private law.

Since April 2014 he is Reseach Director and member of the board of Utrecht School of Law. As of September 2019 he is Head of the Utrecht School of Law.
