On 4 July 2016, the European Commission released its decisions regarding State aid to seven Spanish (Real Madrid on two occasions) and five Dutch professional football clubs. The decisions mark the end of the formal investigations, which were opened in 2013, and constitute a remarkable new chapter to the interaction between EU law and football.

This lecture will introduce and analyse the Commission’s decisions and offer a first take on their potential impact for the future of the relationship between professional football clubs and (especially local) public authorities looking to support them.

Speaker: Oskar van Maren is a Researcher in European and International Sports Law at the Asser Institute. He is an editor of the International Sports Law Blog and has widely published on the application of the EU State Aid rules in the sporting context.
