As Financial Administrator in the Finance and Control (F&C) team of the Asser Institute, your role is to support in general financial administrative tasks, including but not limited to booking purchase invoices, processing reimbursements, and booking bank transactions. It will be your task to support the Financial Controller, who is responsible for overseeing audit, control and compliance tasks, drafting the yearly budget, quarterly prognosis and monthly liquidity overviews, and supporting the Executive Board with relevant management information. In this role, there is a possibility to gradually, over the course of two years, take over the tasks, increase hours and move towards the position of Financial Controller. To this end, we are seeking a candidate who works independently, brings new ideas, and is willing to grow and develop within the role. Together, you’ll help promote the institute’s mission: advancing international and European law.
This is what you will do

Responsibility for financial administrative tasks, including but not limited to booking purchase invoices, processing reimbursements, and booking bank transactions;

Supporting the Financial Controller in related tasks in the F&C department;

Assisting colleagues with matters related to financial administration.
What we ask of you

A finished and relevant education, an HBO Bachelor’s degree or WO Master’s degree equivalent (e.g. in Administration, Accounting, Finance);

At least 2 years of demonstrable experience, preferably in an international environment;

Good written and verbal communication skills (English). Proficiency in other languages (especially Dutch) is a distinct advantage;

Excellent skills with Excel are required; experience working with Exact is an advantage.

Good planning, time management, and organisational skills;

Able to handle multiple projects, work independently and accurately, and be able to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

We offer an appointment for 16 hours a week, initially for the period of one year with a probationary period of two months, and with the intention of converting into permanent employment. Extension of the appointment is subject to satisfactory performance in this period. Considerations of a financial and/or organisational nature may give rise to not converting to permanent employment.

The starting date ideally is 1 November 2026 or sooner.

This position applies to the UFO profile ‘Administrateur 1-2’ and salary scale 9-10. Remuneration depends on the actual level of education, experience, and knowledge, and amounts to a minimum of €3.873 and a maximum of €5.760 gross per month for full-time work, excluding a holiday allowance (8%) and a year-end bonus (8.3%). The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten) is applicable.

A temporary reduction in income tax (equal to 30% of taxable salary) may apply to non-Dutch candidates.

You will be employed by the University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Law, but seconded to the T.M.C. Asser Instituut in The Hague.

Established in 1965, the T.M.C. Asser Instituut is an independent and internationally renowned research centre in international and European law, affiliated with the University of Amsterdam. The Asser Institute’s mission is to contribute to the development of international and European public and private law. We achieve this by:
Independent legal research: We conduct fundamental, policy-oriented, and applied legal research in international and European public and private law.
Knowledge dissemination: We initiate and facilitate academic and expert meetings, (professional) education, and public events aimed at disseminating knowledge of international and European public and private law. We further share our legal knowledge by adding to the public debate.
The institute is organised around the research department, the support staff and T.M.C. Asser Press, the institute’s publishing house. The F&C team is a central department that supports researchers, our projects and events team, and the board with a variety of tasks and requests.
