The Asser Institute is proud to announce the relaunch of the Inter-University Programme on International Criminal Law and Procedure for Ukrainian Law Schools (IUP 2.0), organised within the framework of itsRestoring Dignity and Justice in Ukraineconsortium project funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It builds on outputs from previous editions, including the 2023-2024 edition, supported through the USAID Justice for All Activity, which provided workshops/guest lectures for over 10 law faculties across Ukraine, including academics and hundreds of students.

The objective of the initiative is to strengthen the capacity of law faculties across Ukraine to teach and conduct academic research related to international humanitarian (IHL) and international criminal law (ICL). It aims to equip Ukrainian universities with the expertise needed to train future legal professionals, while also promoting engagement and cooperation with international academics and legal professionals on broader questions of justice and accountability.

With the conflict still ongoing and alleged wide-scale violations of IHL and ICL in Ukraine, as well as the passing of almost two hundred verdicts by Ukrainian courts in war crimes cases, the IUP 2.0 aims to expand and reach more faculties that are either teaching or planning to teach ICL at their establishments.

Keeping with, while at the same time incorporating lessons learnt from previous editions, the IUP 2.0 will develop the following activities for all those interested in participating:

  • four workshops aimed at the academic and teaching staff/PhD candidates, covering topics in more detail/complexity, with a focus on pedagogy/teaching techniques for ICL courses;
  • eight guest lectures aimed at students;
  • developing a teaching manual on ICL.

International experts will cover a wide range of topics related to both procedural and substantive matters of ICL that are tailored to your needs. As of now, the Asser Institute is gathering feedback and suggestions concerning the topics which might be of interest. Therefore, if you have an interest in participating in IUP 2.0, please complete the registration form via the button above.
