The project will research "Defences against military AI (D·AI)": measures taken to anticipate, counter, mitigate, or reduce the risks posed by enemy AI systems. Such countermeasures can protect peoples and nations, but (if used irresponsibly) can also violate international law, harm civilians, and infringe rights. The project will study how the law-of-war, international human rights law, and ius ad bellum regulates defences against adversarial use of military AI. Through this, the project will provide policymakers, armed forces and civil protection with workable guidance to design defensive measures against enemy AI-systems that are both lawful and effective.
