This summer, we build on our 30 years of expertise in the field of international and European sports law to launch a training programme in global sports law and governance. This weeklong programme is dedicated to exploring the governance processes and regulations which rule international sports. It includes deep dives on the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the World Anti-Doping Code, and the FIFA transfer system.
This programme provides knowledge and know-how on key issues related to the global governance and regulation of sport, keeping you updated to the most recent developments in this regard. Some highlights are the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and the ECHR, the adoption of the 2027 World Anti-Doping Code, and the reform of the FIFA transfer system after the Diarra ruling.
The lectures will be led by leading academics in the field of transnational sports law and governance. They will be complemented by interactive practice sessions with seasoned experts in the field, who have experience engaging in the day-to-day of the international regulations of sports.

Programme highlight:
Day 1: The global governance of international sports: Institutions, processes, controversies
- Governance system of the Olympic Movement and the concept of Lex Sportiva.
- Roundtable discussion over the governance shortcomings of sports governing bodies (SGBs) in international sports.
Day 2: The judicial system of international sports
- The operation of internal dispute resolution bodies inside international federations.
- The role and functioning of the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
- A workshop with a seating CAS arbitrator with longstanding experience of CAS processes.
Day 3: The World Anti-Doping Regime: History, institutions and norms
- History of the anti-doping fight in international sport.
- Key principles, rules and processes of the World Anti-Doping Code.
- Engagement with a national anti-doping authority and a case study on a famous anti-doping case delivered by a practitioner.
Day 4: The FIFA transfer system: How the global labour law of football works
- Key principles of the FIFA transfer system and its core institutional mechanisms.
- Exchanges with practitioners that are involved in the operation of the FIFA Football Tribunal, and in charge of resolving disputes between players and clubs, as well as representatives of the players.
Day 5: European law and the global governance of international sports
- The role of EU law and the European Convention on Human Rights as a check on the global governance of international sport.
- The increasing role of the European Court of Human Rights in ensuring that sports governance complies with human rights.

Dr Antoine Duval, senior researcher, Asser Institute
Antoine is the head of the Asser International Sports Law Centre and a well-known academic expert in transnational sports law and governance. He is an editor of the International Sports Law Journal, the leading journal in the field. Antoine has widely published on the subject and is regularly quoted by leading news organizations on issues related to the global governance of sport (Guardian, New York Times, German TV etc.)
