T.M.C. Asser Institute and IUSTICOM are pleased to announce the availability of a valuable new resource for Ukrainians interested in international criminal law: a digital edition of Cassese's International Criminal Law, Third Edition by Antonio Cassese and Paola Gaeta.

About the Resource

The third edition of Cassese's International Criminal Law provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of the main substantive and procedural aspects of international criminal law. This authoritative text combines classic common law approaches with theoretical frameworks to deliver thorough coverage of critical topics including:

  1. The historical evolution of international criminal law
  2. Legal definitions of core crimes including war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, aggression, torture, and terrorism
  3. Forms and modes of criminal responsibility
  4. Prosecution and punishment of international crimes at both national and international levels, including considerations of amnesties, statutes of limitations, and immunities

The work guides readers through extensive case law and materials from multiple jurisdictions, offering insightful analysis that emphasises both political and human contexts. Complete coverage is provided of the International Criminal Court and other modern international criminal courts, encompassing their structure, functioning, proceedings, and relevant case law.

Acknowledgments

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs for funding this initiative through the Restoring Dignity and Justice in Ukraine consortium programme, focused on advancing accountability for international crimes committed in Ukraine. The  programme is implemented by a consortium led by the International Development Law Organisation (IDLO), in partnership with the T.M.C. Asser Instituut, the Center for International Legal Cooperation (CILC), and the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC).

The project aims at institutional strengthening and capacity development needs of the key parties in Ukraine dealing with international crimes: prosecutors, police, judges, as well as journalists and civil society organisations. We believe that with the support of the international community, Ukraine can advance accountability for these crimes.
