MATRA 2020-2024
The MATRA project ''Strengthening Ukraine’s Capacity to Investigate and Prosecute International Crimes" was a joint initiative of the T.M.C. Asser Instituut and Global Rights Compliance. The project was designed to assist investigators, the Office of the Prosecutor General and regional prosecutors' offices, judges, CSOs, journalists and defence lawyers in Ukraine to investigate, prosecute, adjudicate and monitor international crimes.
The T.M.C. Asser Instituut is an inter-university research institute focusing on public international law, private international law, and European law. The institute’s mission is to further the development of international and European law in such a way that it serves the cultivation of trust and respect in the global, regional, national and local societies in which it operates. The Asser Institute is a much-valued partner for international collaborations with foreign universities and with international networks of scholars, legal practitioners and professional societies.
Global Rights Compliance LLP is an international legal partnership committed to enhancing compliance with international law, particularly international humanitarian law (IHL) and human rights. GRC specialises in on-the-ground IHL and human rights issues in conflict-affected and high-risk areas around the world, working to identify, prevent and mitigate adverse IHL and human rights impacts. GRC has been active in Ukraine since early 2015, working on the issues of incorporation and implementation of international criminal law standards. GRC provides services to high-ranking officials in a range of Ukrainian government ministries and also supports civil society organizations in seeking remedies for violations of international law.
The project was funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the MATRA (MAatschappelijke TRAnsformatie: social transformation) Programme and supported by the Netherlands Ministry of Justice and Security.
Project duration: 1 July 2020 - 30 November 2024.
