Studied law at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands) and the Eberhard Karls University, Tübingen (Germany) and wrote his Doctorate thesis on The Precautionary principle. Its application in International, European and Dutch Law (Supervisors: Prof. C. Lambers, Prof.Dr. L.W. Gormley (University of Groningen)). Senior research fellow and head of the European Law section at the T.M.C. Asser Institute (The Hague, The Netherlands).
Working experience:
- Lecturing on European law, European environmental law, national environmental law, Dutch administrative law and international trade law at the University of Groningen and the T.M.C. Asser Institute, the Universities of Warschau, Lublin and Krakau (Poland) and at the Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand as well as for civil servants, judges and public prosecutors in Bukarest (Rumenia) and Sofia (Bulgaria).
- Team leader and legal expert in Phare and TACIS projects on harmonisation with EU legislation in Bosnia Herzegovina and Russia.
- Co-editor of two Dutch manuals on environmental law ('Praktijkboek milieu' and 'Vademecum milieurecht') and of the Dutch journal on environmental case law (Jurisprudentie milieurecht).
- Involved with the 1996 The Hague Conference on the Codification of the Rio Principles. Text of the Declaration adopted in May 1996.
