The Asser Institute and Wageningen University law group (through the REBALANCE Horizon Europe Project, grant number: 101061342) are jointly organising a conference to assess the five years of implementation of the French due diligence law.

In March 2017, the loi relative au devoir de vigilance des sociétés mères et des entreprisesdonneusesd'ordre (French due diligence law) was adopted by the French national assembly, making France the first country to enact a due diligence law. Despite the law’s prominent place in public debates throughout Europe as a legislative model (or counter-model), it remains relatively understudied from an international perspective.

The conference will bring together academics from different disciplines (law, economics, management studies, sociology), as well as practitioners from civil society and French corporations who are directly engaged in the implementation of the law. The main objective of the conference is to look back at the five years of implementation of the French law to, inter alia:

  • Assess its impacts on the management and organisation of corporations falling under its scope;

  • Discuss the law’s effects on communities and environments outside of France;

  • Evaluate the role played by stakeholders and civil society in the implementation of the law;

  • Review the ongoing judicial processes lodged against French companies on the basis of the law;

  • Trace the influence of the French law on other legislations at the national and European level.

Confirmed speakers include Prof. Almut Vacaflor (Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg), Prof. Blanche Segrestin (Mines -Paris), Prof. Guillaume Delalieux (La Rochelle Université), Prof. Maria-Therese Gustafsson (Stockholm University) and Prof. Tim Bartley (Georgetown University and Stockholm University).
