2018 - 14 February - CLEER lecture: "EU-Russia Relations in an Era of Sanctions"

This first CLEER lecture will be delivered by Prof. Peter van Elsuwege (University of Gent). It will take stock of the current relationship between the EU and Russia. Specific attention will be devoted to the legal and political implications of the sanctions regime. In addition, the future of EU-Russia relations will be discussed in light of the EU’s Global Strategy and pending challenges such as the evolution of the Eurasian Economic Union and the EU’s enlargement process towards the Western Balkans.  

Peter Van Elsuwege holds a PhD in Law (University of Ghent, 2007) and a Master in European Law (2001) and International Relations (2000). He joined the European Institute of Ghent University in October 2001 and worked as an Academic Assistant and as a Postdoctoral Fellow of the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) at the European Law Department.On 1 February 2010, he was appointed Tenure Track Professor in EU law. He is also co-director of the Ghent European Law Institute (GELI). His research activities essentially focus on the law of EU external relations. Specific attention is devoted to the legal framework of the relations between the European Union and its East European neighbours.Peter Van Elsuwege is also the academic coordinator of a Jean Monnet Module on “The Legal Dimension of EU External Relations”, an affiliated member of the Centre for the Law of EU External Relations (CLEER) and the Centre for Russian International, Socio-Political and Economic Studies (CERISE).

CLEER, the Centre for the Law of EU External Relations, has established a lecture series with distinguished academics in the area of the law of EU external relations. The lectures centre on topical political and legal developments connected to the role of the EU on the regional and global stage.
