September 17 - 21, 2012 Advanced WTO Training Programme: Recent Trends and Emerging Issues
From September 17 to 21, 2012, the T.M.C. Asser Instituut will be launching an advanced training programme on "WTO Law and Policy: Recent Trends and Emerging Issues" in The Hague.
Objective:
This advanced training programme provides timely, comprehensive and professional information to trade diplomats and attorneys.
The goal of the training is to:
· Equip participants with the knowledge, insights and practical skills on the implementation of global trade rules.
· Raise awareness about topical areas of the global trade relations and obligations.
· Enable participants to better represent and promote their countries’ and clients’ interest in trade relations.
· Enable participants to better represent and promote their countries’ and clients’ interest in trade relations.
· Facilitate networking between diplomats, trade lawyers and international specialists with relevant experience in WTO law.
Issues to be dealt with:
· Trade remedies: anti-dumping measures (the zeroing problem), subsidies and countervailing measures.
· Trade in services and the trade related aspects of intellectual properties: recent trends and emerging issues from trade disputes.
· Expanding market access to foreign companies in public procurement: the gains and rules of the Agreement on Government Procurement (GPA).
· Assessing trade strategies and trade facilitation through standardising rules of foreign investment and competition policy.
· Strategies for an effective and successful representation during the dispute settlement mechanisms.

Renowned experts with many years of experience in international trade negotiations and litigation.

- Dr. Freya Baetens received her doctorate at Cambridge University. She teaches Public International law and International Economic law at Leiden University. Dr Baetens has assisted several arbitration panels and regularly contributes to the drafting of memorials and expert opinions in international dispute settlement.
- Dr. Denise Prévost is Associate Professor in international economic law at Maastricht University and Deputy Academic Director of the Institute for Globalisation and International Regulation (IGIR). Dr Prévost is the author of Balancing Trade and Health in the SPS Agreement: The Development Dimension (Nijmegen: Wolf Legal Publishers 2009).
- Prof. Dr. Harri Kalimo is Professor at the Free University of Brussels (VUB) and Turku University and Visiting Fellow at Yale University. His current research deals with environmental, constitutional, and international trade law.
It is also possible to participate in 1 or more separate days, instead of the entire full-week programme. The fee per day is €450.-
