Methodologies of Human Rights Research

The Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research (NNHRR) is pleased to invite 1st and 2nd year PhD candidates to its two-day PhD Training in April 2026. The training focuses on strengthening your methodological foundations, expanding your research toolkit, and connecting with peers across the network in an academically supportive setting.
Programme Highlights
- Methodology in (human rights) legal research: core approaches and how to make deliberate, well-argued methodological choices.
- From question to design: practical support for sharpening research questions and translating them into a workable research plan.
- Reflexive and critical perspectives: engaging with positionality and critical approaches in human rights scholarship.
- Methodological toolkit sessions: introductions to a small set of methods especially relevant for current and innovative human rights research (e.g., critical discourse analysis, digital ethnography, semi-structured interviewing, citizen-science and co-creation techniques).
- Community & peer exchange: dedicated time to meet fellow PhD candidates, including a social moment and dinner.

- Who can join: Open to NNHRR PhD members, especially 1st and 2nd year candidates (non-members with a fee).
