PhD Training for 3rd and 4th Year Students 2025: Looking Back

The Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research’s annual training for 3rd and 4th year PhD candidates is coming up. This year’s edition will take place on Wednesday, 8 April 2026 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
Next to a tasty lunch and the opportunity to meet peers, you can expect three panel discussions designed to support you in the final stages of your PhD and in preparing what comes next.
Programme highlights
- Life after PhD
Which career paths can you pursue after completing a PhD in human rights, and when to start thinking about that? Four panellists share their experience with working in academia, public service, a national human rights institute, and a human rights law firm.
- Research funds & grants
Can’t get enough of your research? Applying for a fund or grant might be just the thing for you. This panel offers an overview of research funds and grant opportunities, with practical tips and motivational examples from three panellists.
- Publish or perish?
Publishing is an integral part of doing a PhD, yet the peer review process and the journey from dissertation to book often remain behind the scenes. An editor at the Netherlands Quarterly of Human Rights and an editor of the Asser series discuss the ins and outs.
