This conference takes stock of the achievements and challenges of the Better Regulation Agenda, presented by the First Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, on 19 May 2015. This package led to the establishment of a Regulatory Scrutiny Board and a Regulatory Fitness and Performance Programme (REFIT) Platform, seeking to stimulate economic growth and jobs creation, increase EU competitiveness by reducing administrative burdens, and make EU legislation simpler and lighter. Eminent academic and policy-making experts will discuss a number of institutional, substantive and linguistic aspects of better regulation:

  • Juncker Commission’s approach to Better Regulation
  • Competitiveness policy of the Dutch Presidency of the Council of the EU
  • EU impact assessment process
  • The 2016 Interinstitutional Agreement on Better Lawmaking (available here)
  • Simplification and review of the quality of EU legislation
  • Role of language and linguistic diversity in ensuring the coherent application of EU law in EU judicial practice
